7 CHAKRAS, A Guide for Healers, Spiritual Women and Empaths

You are an energetic being comprised of multiple layers and dimensions of vibration and energy! Your fabulous “you energy” is often referred to as your aura and its layers are interconnected at different points called the chakras. These occur in your physical and non-physical being, and there are many of them. Some even extending out within different layers of your aura! But for the purpose of this chat I’m going to discuss the more commonly known chakras located in your physical body.

I’ve created this Beginners Guide to Chakras to talk about the 7 most well known chakras. Below you will find detailed information alongside a graphic symbol that represents each one.

You can use this information to feel better in every day life yourself. Or as a guide / refresher when working with energy healing in your practice, with family or friends.

What are Chakras?

Derived from the Sanskrit word which translates as “wheel of light”, the physical chakras are concentrations of nerves and energy meridians located at specific points on your body. Each chakra has affinities to different spiritual, emotional, mental and physical aspects of your being.

There are 7 commonly referred to chakras in the body and often they are referred to by numbers starting at the root chakra as number 1 up to the crown as number 7.

Personally, as an energy healer I find that focusing on the crown chakra and working my way down to the root chakra has the great benefit of grounding the persons energy into the earth. However, you can work with chakras individually or in combinations and in any direction you like! The point is to become familiar with these energy centres on your body and how they feel to you, both individually and as a group.

Descending from the top of your head to the base of your spine:

  • Crown Chakra – located at the top of your head extending up about 6 to 8 inches
  • 3rd Eye Chakra – located between and slightly above your eyes on your forehead
  • Throat Chakra – located at the base of your throat
  • Heart Chakra – located in the centre of your chest
  • Solar Plexus Chakra – located just below your sternum and above your belly button
  • Sacral Chakra – over the sacrum (the triangular-shaped bone at the base of your spine)
  • Root Chakra – located at the base of your spine

Chakras allow for the flow of energy in to and out of your system. Kind of like energetic doors or portals.
When there is an even amount of energy flowing through your energy centres it is often referred to as open or balanced chakras. You will feel energized, connected and full of life!

But when one or more of these chakra points is out of balance, you will likely feel tired, may have certain physical symptoms associated with that area and can feel a full host of negative emotions.

Caroline Myss’ take on chakras is that “Every thought and experience you’ve ever had in your life gets filtered through these chakra databases”. So you can imagine what a source of inner strength you have by understanding them! Your ability to manifest what you want and need in your life starts simply by identifing where you need help or support, then focusing healing on that chakra/s.

As you will see below, each one represents different aspects of your body, mind and soul. And chakras have many associations from different faiths and cultures including symbols, sounds, crystals and most commonly, specific colours.

When you are facing challenges, overwhelm or lack in different parts of your life or in your physical body, you can look to the chakras for help.

How many days should you spend on each Chakra?

    Reply
    • Tanya Kucey

Great questions Stefanie! Everyone goes at their own pace – so while I cannot give you an exact time, I can say that you will likely feel a shift in your energy when your chakra is in balance. Often that feels like a sense of relief or lightness of being. Really, its about you and your energy. As a general guideline try focusing on 1 chakra a day to start.

Hey Janet – thanks for the feedback! Sounds are remarkably healing when doing chakra work – even if you’re not a musical person the vibration can open the energy and start that balancing process on its own.
